SENTENCING

Recently a career criminal was before the Courts charged with manufacture and supply of methamphetamine. When arrested, the maximum sentence available was 14 yrs imprisonment.

After his arrest and before his trial, the Government increased the penalty for manufacture and supply of methamphetamine to one of life imprisonment.

The sentencing Judge gave him 10 years so he will be elible for parole at 1/3rd of the sentence.

What was so wrong with the Judge saying “You are lucky that the present penalty of life imprisonment was not available at the time of your arrest. In light of the seriousness that the Government views this offending, I am sentencing you to 14 years”.

Does anyone receive the maximum for anything? Surely that Judge was in contempt of Government?
